Meet the interns: Definely's 2021 Summer Internship Programme
As a fast-growing, VC-backed company, Definely is always on the lookout for standout talent. Our Summer Internship Programme is designed to give graduates the opportunity to experience life working at a leading start-up. Let’s meet the interns in our 2021 Summer cohort!
Ice Prisanadilok - Sales and Customer Success Intern
Hello, my name is Ice Prisanadilok and I recently graduated with a Law degree from King’s College London. Coming from a law background, I was curious to understand how technology will disrupt the legal industry. I was fortunate to come across Definely through the University’s student society, King’s IT & IP Law Society (KIIPS), and applied to Definely’s internship programme to gain an insight into LawTech, which is rare to find amongst legal start-ups.
My first few days at Definely were incredibly exciting and gave me exposure to what a fast-paced working environment truly means. From jumping onto calls with Definely’s impressive list of clients including Allen & Overy, Deloitte and Dentons to working on marketing strategies, every day is different and filled with learning opportunities to help me grow.
From the very first week, I am already learning the process of adopting legal technology within law firms and in-house legal teams, as well as gaining an understanding of the opportunities and challenges of legal technology in the legal landscape.
Everyone was extremely welcoming and Definely’s open and supportive culture was clear from the outset. The team made sure to catch up on how we were doing and took some time out of their day to teach us the fundamentals of Definely. It was clear that our opinions and contributions are valued within the team - we are already plugged into different projects that are contributing to Definely’s growth and I am looking forward to seeing what’s in store for this upcoming month!
Andrew Siu - Sales and Customer Success Intern
My name is Andrew and I am a recent law graduate at the London School of Economics. Although never leaving my room, my first week interning at Definely has felt like a whistle-stop tour around the (virtual) office building. Every day we have poked our heads into a new department, eager to absorb as much information about the functions behind Definely's success.
A few moments stand out from this first week, in particular hearing the story of Definely, as told by founder and CEO Nnamdi. Definely was originally conceived as a solution to help lawyers with visual impairments with the day-to-day tasks of reading and understanding legal documents; however, that was only the start of what the company has evolved into. Nnamdi gave an account of the part of the story that perhaps does not get heard as much; the struggle to take the idea of Definely and turn it into a reality. In particular, the crisis moment where developer after developer told Nnamdi that building a LegalTech tool like Definely simply wasn’t possible, yet he managed to find a solution. His conviction is inspiring, and it is clear that Nnamdi’s tenacity and drive to solve the problems lawyers face is shared by the entire Definely team.
A key learning point for me was the Product Led Growth (PLG) model, where software companies like Definely focus on solving daily workflow pain points for the end-user, such as removing the need for lawyers to scroll through legal documents, use Ctrl+F or print hard copies to find the meanings of terms and references with their one-click solution. On my second day, I was given the opportunity to sit in on a catch-up call with a Magic Circle customer. What struck me was how evangelical the associate we spoke to was about Definely, that is the power of PLG.
Francesca Colombo - Marketing and PR Intern
Hello, I’m Francesca and I am pursuing a MA in Public Relations at the London College of Communication. I chose Definely for a Summer internship to gain real-life work experience in a buzzing start-up. In our modern-day society we are dominated by technology; interning at Definely gives me a first-hand look at how SaaS efficiency tools are made and the opportunity to work with different departments in an award-winning company.
My first few days have been intensive and stimulating, after a warm welcome from former intern, Delicia who now works full time at Definely as an Operations Associate, we had sessions with the entire team to gain an overview of how the company works. From demoing the software and discovering the many features of Definely to gain a better understanding of how it benefits law firms, in-house lawyers and the legal industry as a whole, it has been inspiring to see people who are passionate and motivated in what they do, and who have a clear purpose and mission in mind.
It has been an exciting and challenging experience right from the beginning. Some of my first responsibilities were to coordinate and write the interns’ blog and to create content for the company's social media accounts including Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. As a current master's student studying Public Relations, I am gaining valuable experience working with Head of Marketing, Freya Ells to write press releases about the exciting announcements Definely has in the pipeline and learning product marketing strategies for the new features that are launching soon.
Interning at Definely has already given me invaluable insight into life at a best-in-class start-up and will help me in my career within the communication industry.
Evelyn Ting – Tech and Product Intern
Hello, my name is Evelyn and I am a graduate in Computing at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The first week was marked by several memorable moments. Although the team and interns are all located in different time zones, we had an excellent onboarding structure in place and used software like Slack and Google Drive to successfully work collaboratively with the team.
The daily schedule included introductions to Definely’s department heads, and workshops to provide a comprehensive understanding of how the company operates including the Sales, Marketing, AI and Machine Learning and Operations and Fundraising departments.
There is such a friendly and helpful community here at Definely, and everyone wants the interns to feel welcomed and valuable. I was given the opportunity to work on a task alongside the Tech and Product team related to the auto-complete function; using Bitbucket for version control, Swagger for the OpenAPI, and Python as the main language, I was able to gain real-life experience applying my knowledge to technical solutions.
As well as working on challenging and stimulating tasks, Definely prioritises and encourages well-being in the workplace; we finished the week with a game of Pictionary to get to know one another better and unwind before the weekend. I am excited to learn more from the experts at Definely and gain a greater understanding of the technology behind their proprietary software solution for lawyers.
