What is gender bias?
Definition: Gender bias is the tendency to prefer one gender over another. It is a form of unconscious bias, or implicit bias, which occurs when one individual unconsciously attributes certain attitudes and stereotypes to another person or group of people. These ascribed behaviours affect how the individual understands and engages with others.
3 initiatives we’ve taken at Definely to help eradicate gender bias
- Acknowledging Gender Bias Exists
Whether consciously or subconsciously, gender bias exists in us all. Acknowledging this and cultivating an environment where our team can openly discuss gender bias was the first step to solving the problem. By introducing town hall meetings, employee feedback surveys and an open-door policy, we have created a space for our team to make suggestions, challenge processes and improve our company culture.
- Benchmarking Salaries Across the Business
When it comes to pay, there is a systemic gap with women earning less than men carrying out the same role. At Definely, we’ve removed ourselves from the salary process, using an external company to benchmark 50+ roles. We now have a clear, unbiased formula for salaries using anonymised data and different levers such as years of experience, number of direct reports, and location.
- Addressing Diversity at Every Level
Company diversity doesn’t always add up to representation across teams. By addressing diversity within individual teams, such as technology and leadership, we have better representation throughout the company. It’s equally important to recognise the systemic lack of women in STEM and consider succession and pipeline planning. To ensure there are routes for women entering a career in STEM, we offer internships, creating new opportunities for the future female leaders of Definely.
